	Description
	Singulair [Montelukast Sodium] is an anti-allergic drug which is used for the treatment of asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis also known as hay fever. It contains Montelukast Sodium which is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist. Leukotrienes are naturally occurring chemicals group in the body which promotes inflammation in case of asthma seasonal allergic rhinitis and other allergic diseases. When leukotrienes are released they bind on other cells and stimulate them to promote inflammation. Montelukast prevents some leukotrienes from binding them which helps to minimize breathing problem sneezing runny and itchy nose caused by asthma and allergies. Singulair does not affect the elimination of other drugs because montelukast does not inhibit enzymes CYP2C9 or CYP3A4 present in the liver that are important in breaking down and eliminating many drugs. Singulair is safe and effective even for a 6 months old baby. The oral granule pack of the allergy medicine Singulair contains inactive ingredients like mannitol hydroxypropyl cellulose and magnesium stearate. Chewable anti-allergic tablets contain inactive ingredients like mannitol microcrystalline cellulose hydroxypropyl cellulose red ferric oxide croscarmellose sodium cherry flavor aspartame and magnesium stearate. This allergy medicine contain inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose lactose monohydrate croscarmellose sodium hydroxypropyl cellulose and magnesium stearate. Film coating of tablets contain hydroxypropyl methylcellulose hydroxypropyl cellulose titanium dioxide red ferric oxide yellow ferric oxide and carnauba wax. Singulair [Montelukast Sodium] is approved by FDA in 1998.


	How to use
	Singulair [Montelukast Sodium] comes in three different forms- tablets chewable tablets and oral granules. For children 4mg and 5mg chewable tablets are recommended whereas 4 mg oral granule pack is recommended for babies and 10mg tablets are recommended for adults. Singulair should be taken once daily in the evening with or without food. For adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older dosage is one 10mg tablet. For pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age dosage is one 5mg chewable tablet. For pediatric patients 2 to 5 years of age dosage is one 4mg chewable tablet or one packet of 4mg oral granules. For pediatric patients 6 to 23 months of age dosage is one packet of oral granules. Singulair 4mg oral granules can be taken either directly in the mouth or dissolved in 1 teaspoonful 5 mL of cold or room temperature baby formula breast milk or soft food. The packet should not be opened until ready to use and after opening full dose should be taken within 15 minutes. It must not be stored for future use. Discard unused portion.


	Side Effects
	Usually the percentage of patients experiencing side effects is very less. Headaches dizziness abdominal pain and cough are common side effects in adult. Fever sore throat and diarrhea are reported in case of children. Other side effects like liver failure and allergic reactions are also reported.


	Drug Interaction
	Singulair [Montelukast Sodium] has been administered with other therapies and commonly prescribed drugs in clinical studies with no apparent increase in adverse reaction. Drugs like Phenobarbital or Rifampin increases the blood concentration of Montelukast by 40 approximately. Dose of Singulair may need to be reduced when these drugs are co-administered with it.


	Uses
	Singulair [Montelukast Sodium] is used for the treatment of asthma seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is also used for the prevention of exercise-induced asthma in patients 15 years of age and older. One should not take Singulair if he/she is allergic to Singulair or any of its ingredients. Singulair [Montelukast Sodium] may not be right for pregnant woman. Breast-feeding mother should always consult the physician before taking Singulair as it can be passed to the baby through breast feeding. Singulair is not for an immediate relief from an asthma attack. Consult the physician immediately or follow the instructions as the physician directed.

	Storage
	Singulair [Montelukast Sodium] should be stored at room temperature 15o to 30o C 59o to 86o F. Protect from moisture and light. It should be stored in original package.
