	Description
	Abilify is an antipsychotic drug. It belongs to a group of medications called atypical or second-generation antipsychotic medications. It works by changing the actions of certain chemicals in the brain by lessenening it or by blocking it. Abilify is composed of active ingredient known as Aripiprazole and other inactive ingredients. Abilify is manufactured in different form such as Abilify as tablets Abilify Discmelt as orally disintegrating tablets Abilify as oral solution and Abilify as injection. Abilify injection is for intramuscular use only. Abilify is used for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and in adolescents 13 to 17 years of age acute manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and in pediatric patients 10 - 17 years of age and Major Depression Disorder when used with antidepressants in adults. Abilify tablets are available in different strengths in 2mg 5mg 10mg 15mg 20mg and 30mg. Abilify oral solution is available in 150 ml with a concentration of 1mg/ml. Abilify Discmelt is available in 10mg and 15mg. Abilify injection of 1.3ml with 7.5mg/ml.


	How to use
	Dosing of Abilify depends on number of factors like the age of the patient the medical condition and its severity and other medications currently taking. The recommended initial dose of Abilify for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults is 10-15mg once daily. It can increase to 30mg daily. For the patients of age 13 to 17 years old the recommended initial Abilify dose should be 2 mg once daily. It can increase to 10mg and maximum to 30mg daily. The recommended initial dose of Abilify for the treatment of Major Depression Disorder when used with antidepressants in adults is 2-5mg once daily. The effective dose is usually 5-10mg once daily. It can be increased to a maximum of 15mg once daily. While taking Abilify avoid breast-feeding an infant. Do not take alcohol while administering Abilify.


	Side Effects
	Use of Abilify causing very common side effects are vomiting nausea tiredness and weakness headache light-headedness trouble sleeping restlessness blurred vision and constipation. Some uncommon effects are also reported during the administration of Abilify. They are dizziness while changing the posture of the body tremor seizure weight gain jerking movements and fast heart beat rate. Some rare adverse effects found due to the usage of Abilify are muscle stiffness combination of fever faster breathing sweating reduced consciousness and sudden change in blood pressure and heart beat rate. Some very rare side effects reported are allergic reaction such as swelling in the mouth or throat rash and itching increased production of saliva speech disorder inflammation of pancreas muscle pain stiffness weakness fainting nervousness cramps vertigo tinnitus low or high thyroid gallstone kidney stone hair loss and anemia. Abilify is known to cause certain sexual side effects such as changes in sex drive or libido impotence and priapism a painful erection of penis that persist even after sexual intercourse or masturbation. Elderly patients with psychosis related to dementia should not be treated with Abilify as it may increase risk to death with stroke and mini stroke. Abilify is not approved for use in pediatrics and young adult patients with depression as it may increase suicidal thoughts or behaviors.


	Drug Interaction
	Alcohol is not recommended to be consumed while the patient is on Abilify treatment. It may cause unwanted side effects like drowsiness and low blood pressure. Administering Abilify with certain antibiotics or antifungals or cimetidines or antidepressants or Imatinibs or quinidine medications may raise the level of Abilify in blood increasing the risk of side effects. Taking Abilify with protease inhibitors may raise the level of Abilify in blood will increase the risk of side effects. Taking Abilify with certain anticonvulsants or rifamycin antibiotics medications may lower the level of Abilify in blood making it less effective.


	Uses
	Abilify is licensed for the treatment of conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and Major Depressive Disorder when alone antidepressant is not adequate to attain desired effect.


	Storage
	Abilify tablets should be stored at a room temperature away from direct sunlight heat and moisture. Oral solution should be stored in refrigerator and can be used for up to 6 months after opening.
